What to see and do in Fageca

Fageca
Village
Fageca, officially called Facheca in Spanish, is a small mountain municipality in northern Alicante, in the Seta valley, between the Serrella and Alfaro mountain ranges, with about 100 inhabitants. Its name comes from the Latin fagus, beech, a tree once abundant in the area. After the Christian conquest in the mid-13th century it came under the marquises of Guadalest and was a Morisco settlement until the expulsion of 1609, being repopulated afterwards with Majorcans; its church has been a parish since 1574. Besides the lime kilns, the dry-stone enclosures and the old snow pits that recall its traditional trades, it preserves the Torre del Pla de la Casa, at 1,359 metres the highest castle in the province, and a centuries-old elm, today reduced to its trunk, killed by Dutch elm disease.

Curiosity
The municipal district of Fageca preserves lime kilns, dry-stone shepherds' pens and old snow wells, evidence of the traditional activities of this small mountain village at the foot of the Serrella.

Nature
The path that climbs to the sierra of Serrella from Fageca runs along a mountain range that stretches 15 kilometres from southwest to northeast between the municipalities of Benasau, Quatretondeta, Fageca, Famorca, Castell de Castells, Confrides and l'Abdet, in the El Comtat comarca, and culminates at Pla de la Casa, at 1,387 metres. Holm oak woods, pine forests, ash trees and yews grow on its slopes, and it holds the only known wild holly specimen in the whole province of Alicante. Birds of prey nest on the rocky crags, and common fauna include nightingales, partridges, thrushes, carrion crows, rabbits, foxes, wild boar, badgers and weasels.
