Ráfol de Salem
Village
Ráfol de Salem, officially el Ràfol de Salem, is one of the smallest municipalities of La Vall d'Albaida, in the province of Valencia, with 463 inhabitants, on the northern slopes of the Sierra de Benicadell. Its Arabic name, Raf-al-giz, alludes to a clay workshop, a material that sustained a pottery industry of jars for oil and wine, today converted into tiles and bricks, alongside agriculture of vines and olives. It preserves an 18th-century flour mill, the molí de baix, restored in 2002 and today a hostel, and an oil museum in a former 1950s cooperative oil press. Its parish church, dedicated to Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, was extended in 1760.
