Beniatjar
Village
Beniatjar is a municipality of La Vall d'Albaida, in Valencia, on the shaded slope of the Sierra del Benicadell, next to the Micena river. Its origin was a Muslim hamlet conquered by James I and granted to Paz de Tarazona in 1258; it passed from the duchy of Villahermosa to the marquisate of Milán, and together with Otos it formed a vicariate until becoming an independent parish in 1574. Of the Morisco population, expelled in 1609, about a hundred families remained by then. The town is dominated by the castle of la Carbonera, an Andalusi fortress that in the 13th century headed a domain over Bèlgida, Otos and other neighbouring towns and which was destroyed in 1339; at its foot open the Coves del Castell de Carbonera, with cave paintings. Also notable is the church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación, from 1689, Baroque and Neoclassical.
