What to see and do in Rafal

Rafal
Village
Rafal is a municipality in the Vega Baja del Segura, in the southeast of Alicante, on the left bank of the río Segura and completely surrounded by the municipal district of Orihuela. It has 4,849 inhabitants (INE 2025) and is Spanish-speaking. The comarca was land of vineyards, olive groves and wheat since Roman times, when the Iberians came down from the mountains to the fertile vegas of the Segura and Vinalopó and irrigation was introduced; however, for lack of archaeological remains in Rafal, everything suggests that it was not until the arrival of the Arabs, who called it Rahal Al-Wazir, that a village dedicated to farming arose here. Its main monument is the church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario, begun in 1639 by Jerónimo de Rocamora, marquis of Rafal, the first great commission of the lineage that gave the municipality its name.
Church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Rafal
Monument
The church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario began to be built in 1639 by order of Jerónimo de Rocamora, 1st Marquis of Rafal, who had already built the church of San Jerónimo in Benferri in 1622. On his death that same year, the works were continued by his son Gaspar de Rocamora, 2nd Marquis, who had the Rocamora and García de Lasa coats of arms placed on the façade. In 1640 a first phase was completed, with the main altar and a small bell tower that an earthquake would bring down almost two centuries later. The 3rd Marquis brought here from Puebla de Rocamora the image of the patron saint, the Virgin of the Rosary, and her altarpiece. The work, funded by the successive marquises of Rafal, was not considered finished until around 1700.
