What to see and do in Bigastro

Bigastro
Village
The church of Nuestra Señora de Belén (Our Lady of Bethlehem) in Bigastro, from the eighteenth century, preserves in its right-hand chapel a carving of Saint Joachim popularly known as El Abuelo (The Grandfather), the work of the Valencian image-maker Felipe Andreu; the saint arrived in the village in 1793, an anniversary solemnly commemorated in October 1993. Bigastro, in the Vega Baja del Segura, in southern Alicante, is a Spanish-speaking municipality of 7,537 inhabitants that built its economy on flax and hemp and, after the nineteenth-century textile crisis, turned to citrus fruit and market gardening. From 10 to 16 August it celebrates its patronal festival in honour of Saint Joachim, with the crowded procession of El Abuelo, and its cuisine is noted for cocido with meatballs and a pastry tradition of almojábanas, toñas and almendrados.
