Church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Rafal Monument · Rafal, El Baix Segura, Alicante The church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario began to be built in 1639 by order of Jerónimo de Rocamora, 1st Marquis of Rafal, who had already built the church of San Jerónimo in Benferri in 1622. On his death that same year, the works were continued by his son Gaspar de Rocamora, 2nd Marquis, who had the Rocamora and García de Lasa coats of arms placed on the façade. In 1640 a first phase was completed, with the main altar and a small bell tower that an earthquake would bring down almost two centuries later. The 3rd Marquis brought here from Puebla de Rocamora the image of the patron saint, the Virgin of the Rosary, and her altarpiece. The work, funded by the successive marquises of Rafal, was not considered finished until around 1700. Photo: Galopax (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Rafal
