What to see and do in Cox

Cox
Village
Cox is a municipality in El Baix Segura, in the province of Alicante, situated at the foot of the Sierra de Callosa, surrounded by market gardens irrigated by the Segura. Materials found on the hill where its castle stands show occupation from the Chalcolithic and Bronze Age, and permanently from the fifth-fourth centuries BC, when the Iberians settled there, followed by Romans, Byzantines, Visigoths and Arabs until the conquest of James I. Its main monument is the Castillo de Santa Bárbara, a fortification of Muslim origin and one of the oldest preserved in the Region of Valencia, restored in recent decades; its Baroque-Neoclassical church was built between 1774 and 1778 by the architect Miguel de Francia Guillén. It has 7,722 inhabitants (2025).
Castle of Santa Bárbara de Cox
Monument
Santa Bárbara castle in Cox (Alicante), of Muslim origin, is one of the oldest surviving fortifications in the Comunitat Valenciana and in Spain: materials found at the site show continuous occupation from the Chalcolithic and the Bronze Age to the present, with remains from Iberian, Roman and medieval times. Around 1466 the lord of the manor, Juan Ruíz Dávalos, commissioned a thorough restoration that added the chapel dedicated to Santa Bárbara that gives the castle its name. Set at 80 metres above sea level, with views over the Vega Baja del Segura, it retains a polygonal walled enclosure and a masonry palace, restored in the last decades of the 20th century to recover their original appearance, and it is considered Cox's main monument.
