What to see and do in Dolores

Dolores
Village
Dolores, in El Baix Segura (Alicante), has 8,326 inhabitants (2025) on the deltaic plain of the Segura river. Its name, from the Marian invocation of Our Lady of Sorrows, follows the custom of giving religious names to newly founded settlements, as Cardinal Belluga also did with San Felipe Neri or San Fulgencio. The municipality arose from Belluga's Pious Foundations, which in 1715 received 25,000 tahúllas of marshy land from Orihuela to drain and colonise, creating the market gardens and new villages of the Vega Baja; it separated from Orihuela and Guardamar in 1729 and received the title of town from Philip V in 1734. It preserves the grid layout over the old azarbes (drainage channels) and a mid-eighteenth-century church with a dome and a blue-tiled bell tower.

Monument
Raised in the middle of the 18th century with a dome and bell tower of blue tiles, it formed part of the Pías Fundaciones promoted by Cardinal Belluga to settle the marshy lands of the lower Segura.

Historical milestone
In May 1715 Orihuela ceded to cardinal Luis Antonio de Belluga 25,000 tahúllas of unhealthy salt marsh to be colonised. The draining of those marshes, with the backing of Felipe V, created the huerta and the new towns of the Vega Baja.

Historical milestone
Dolores separated from Orihuela and from Guardamar in 1729 and Felipe V granted it the title of villa by royal decree of 12 February 1734. Its grid layout, with straight streets over the old drainage ditches, comes from Belluga's colonisation.
