Villavieja del Lozoya
Village
Villavieja del Lozoya is a municipality of about 332 residents in the middle valley of the río Lozoya, in the Sierra Norte of Madrid, at 1,066 metres above sea level, with a compact, almost circular settlement, clearly visible on arriving by road from Buitrago del Lozoya. It was called simply Villavieja until the 1916 reform of the place-name register. It preserves a wash house with twelve intact individual stalls, a former meeting place for the village's women, and a museum in the old forge; its Mudéjar arch, unique in its style in the Sierra Norte and found while restoring a house in El Cerrito, probably dates from the 13th-14th centuries. Its patron saint festivities of the Immaculate Conception, on the third weekend of August, include the Romería de los Pontones.
