What to see and do in Puentes Viejas

Puentes Viejas
Village
Puentes Viejas is a municipality of the Community of Madrid, in the Lower Valley of the Lozoya, within the Sierra Norte, created in 1975 by the merger of Mangirón, seat of the town hall, Paredes de Buitrago and Serrada de la Fuente, and named after the reservoir of the same name. It brings together about 759 inhabitants in a mountainous area reaching 1,000 m in altitude, dotted with the reservoirs of Puentes Viejas, El Villar, El Atazar and the Tenebroso weir, built by the Canal de Isabel II to supply Madrid with water. Since 2015 it has been possible to walk, through the pine wood of Paredes de Buitrago, the Ruta del Frente del Agua, up to 12 kilometres long, which preserves Civil War bunkers of both sides and a former command post.
Trail of la Guerra Civil del Frente del Agua
Activity
A circular route of some eight kilometres along a forest track at Paredes de Buitrago, with twenty-six restored features from the war — machine-gun nests, bunkers, trenches and command posts — that defended the reservoirs supplying Madrid.

Historical milestone
In 1975 Mangirón, Paredes de Buitrago and Serrada de la Fuente merged into a single municipality that took the name of the neighboring reservoir. In the pine woods of Paredes, trenches and bunkers of the so-called Water Front of the Civil War survive.
