What to see and do in La Serna del Monte

La Serna del Monte
Village
La Serna del Monte, with about 110 inhabitants, occupies a plateau of pastures at 1,074 metres on the southern slope of the sierra de Guadarrama, in the Sierra Norte of Madrid. 90% of its municipal area is pasture with scrubland, chestnut trees, Pyrenean oak woods and holm oaks, and it is crossed from northeast to south by livestock trails such as the Cañada Real Segoviana. The territory belonged in the Middle Ages to the area of Braojos, from which it did not become independent as a settlement until 1766; until 1916 the municipality was simply called La Serna. It lived off agriculture until the mid-20th century, when the activity became almost exclusively livestock farming. It preserves the church of San Andrés, with a Baroque altarpiece from the 18th century, and the Piedra de las Veces, a sundial that allocated irrigation turns.
Stone of the Turns
Curiosity
A circular stone slab with an iron rod at its centre, set up opposite the town hall, which served as a sundial for irrigation: the engraved radii marked the veces, the turn allotted to each villager to draw water from the communal channel.
