Braojos
Village
Braojos is a municipality in the Sierra Norte of Madrid, situated at an altitude of 1,192 metres, within the sphere of influence of the historic Somosierra pass, along which the so-called Camino de Francia once ran; the Arcones pass is also found within its boundaries. Its origin is uncertain, though it seems more likely to be a settlement that arose after the Reconquista, when shepherds built the first medieval settlement, of scattered layout. From 1096 it formed part of the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Buitrago, of which it was the head town of one of its seven quarters. Its church of San Vicente Mártir, begun in 1601, holds an altarpiece by Gregorio Fernández from 1633, and at Christmas La Pastorela is danced, a dance of medieval origin. It now has around 233 inhabitants.
