Gargantilla del Lozoya y Pinilla de Buitrago
Village
Gargantilla del Lozoya y Pinilla de Buitrago are two settlements in the Sierra Norte of Madrid, beside the river Lozoya and the Riosequillo reservoir, at over 1,130 metres of altitude, which together have around 396 inhabitants. Gargantilla was founded in the 15th century, shortly after neighbouring Garganta de los Montes, by residents fleeing an epidemic; another village once stood within its boundaries, now vanished, of which only the hermitage of Santiago remains. Pinilla grew up around its 16th-century church and did not become independent from the Duke of Infantado until 1753; the two municipalities merged in the mid-19th century. Each village preserves its own 16th-century church, San Benito Abad and the Santísima Trinidad, and remains survive of argentiferous lead mines, such as that of San Carlos.
