Navarredonda y San Mamés
Village
Navarredonda and San Mamés are two mountain hamlets of the Sierra Norte of Madrid that together total about 163 inhabitants, in a municipality of mountainous and largely forested character. Navarredonda was founded by the Arabs in the mid-11th century as a simple cluster of shepherds' huts, and in the 12th century it was resettled by shepherds who came from Sepúlveda, in the province of Segovia; livestock farming has been the basis of its economy ever since. Through San Mamés runs the Chorro stream, which flows into the Riosequillo reservoir, and through Navarredonda the Nava stream, both coming from the sierra de Guadarrama. Of the church of San Miguel Arcángel only the Romanesque apse survived the Civil War, rebuilt in 1962; the natural attraction is the waterfall that comes down from the sierra among footpaths.
