Piñuécar-Gandullas
Village
Piñuécar-Gandullas is a municipality in the comarca of the Sierra Norte of Madrid, in the Lozoya valley, formed by two separate population centres, at 1,061 metres above sea level and with about 183 inhabitants. Piñuécar, whose name alludes to the pine tree, which dominates the flora of the municipal area, preserves the church of San Simón Apóstol; nearby stands the bell-gable of Santo Domingo, seat of the former Tribunal de Aguas that settled the water affairs of Piñuécar and its hamlets. Gandullas, whose name may be of Basque origin and refer to the huts of the shepherds who founded it, was its own municipality until the 18th century and preserves the church of Nuestra Señora de la Paz; its old turn-keeping stone gave rise to the sundial that appears on the municipal coat of arms.
