What to see and do in Horcajo de la Sierra-Aoslos

Horcajo de la Sierra-Aoslos
Village
Its 219 inhabitants are divided between Horcajo, perched at 1,066 metres on the rise of Los Altillos, in the middle valley of the Lozoya, and Aoslos, three kilometres away amid flat meadows. As early as the 13th century it was a pasture community dependent on Buitrago, chosen for its defensive position on the route north through the peninsula. It grew very slowly until reaching its demographic peak in 1930, with 489 inhabitants, after which it began a sharp decline. The name Aoslos was added to that of the municipality in 2009; before that it was known simply as Horcajo de la Sierra. Between the two settlements runs a route of about twelve kilometres through ash and oak woods. The mid-August festivities end with the girls' round and the auction of San Roque's ring-shaped pastries.
