Horcajuelo de la Sierra
Village
Horcajuelo de la Sierra is a municipality of the Community of Madrid, at the north-eastern end of the Sierra Norte, within the association of municipalities of the Sierra del Rincón. Its name may derive from the fact that horca also means village between rivers, since the settlement sits on a hill at the foot of which the Garita and Grande streams meet, at 1,144 metres. A little over a hundred residents, compared with the 250 it had in the mid-19th century, today live with no direct bus connection to the city of Madrid. Notable features include the Gothic church of San Nicolás de Bari, from the 15th century, the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, and an ethnological museum, opened in 1977 in a restored traditional house. It celebrates San Antonio de Padua on 13 June and its patronal festivities on the last weekend of August.
