What to see and do in La Acebeda

La Acebeda
Village
La Acebeda is a hamlet in the Sierra Norte of Madrid, perched at 1,272 metres beside the pass of the same name, with barely 70 inhabitants, far from the 360 it once had in 1889, its historic peak. Its name recalls the holly trees, some centuries old, that still grow in the area; the village was born during the Reconquista, when transhumant shepherds from neighbouring Horcajo de la Sierra began building houses beside the royal drove road. In 1833 it passed from the province of Segovia to that of Madrid. It preserves the Baroque church of San Sebastián, from the 17th century, with an altar of paintings from 1500, as well as La Fragua, with its old forge furnace and anvil, and the sanctuary of the Virgen Blanca del Saz. The Cañada Real Segoviana runs through its area.
