What to see and do in La Hiruela

La Hiruela
Village
La Hiruela is one of the smallest municipalities in the Community of Madrid, with around 88 inhabitants, situated at 1,257 metres in the Sierra del Rincón; in 2020 it was the third least populated municipality in the region. It belonged to the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Sepúlveda, within the Ochavo de la Sierra, and was integrated into the municipality of Colmenar de la Sierra, formerly being called La Hiruela de Buitrago. After the provincial reorganisation of 1833 it passed from the province of Segovia to that of Guadalajara, from which it became independent in 1834; since 1838, with the second provincial reorganisation, it has belonged to Madrid. It retains black slate architecture, an old flour mill, an ethnological museum and extensive oak woods, and has very limited public transport.

Nature
The communal ox pasture of this village set at 1,257 metres preserves a wood of Pyrenean and sessile oak that drops down to the Jarama; it is crossed by the Molino a Molino and Oficios de la Vida paths, with a traditional flour mill, apiary and charcoal kiln.
