El Cardoso de la Sierra
Village
El Cardoso de la Sierra is a municipality in the extreme northwest of the Serranía de Guadalajara, bordering Segovia and Madrid, which groups together the settlements of Bocígano, Cabida, Colmenar de la Sierra, Corralejo, Peñalba de la Sierra and La Vihuela, with 49 inhabitants. It lies in the highest part of the Sierra de Ayllón, with the Pico del Lobo (2,273 m), the highest point in the province. Documented since the 11th century, when Christians resettled the sierra after the fall of Buitrago del Lozoya, it was granted the title of villa in 1278; in 1373 it passed to the lordship of the Mendoza family of Buitrago, from which it later became independent. The Jarama river runs through its municipal area, populated with oaks, pine forests and holm oaks. The village preserves the church of Santiago Apóstol, of Romanesque origin.
