What to see and do in Puebla de la Sierra

Puebla de la Sierra
Village
Puebla de la Sierra is a town of barely 98 residents, in a secluded valley at about 1,100 metres, at the foot of the sierra del Lobosillo, in the north of Madrid; the municipality is bordered by that sierra except to the south, where the valley opens out towards the Atazar reservoir. Its origin may go back to defensive settlements created in the Buitrago area in the 12th century; at the end of the 13th century, when it was still called Puebla de la Mujer Muerta, it belonged to a Madrid archdeacon who had received it from Sancho IV, and in 1490 the Marquis of Santillana made it a town, a name it kept until 1941. In 1768 it reached its highest historical population, 313 inhabitants. It houses a museum of Japanese art of the painter Federico Eguía, with more than two hundred works, and a hermitage from 1562.

Curiosity
An open-air museum born of a sculpture workshop held in the village in 1998: more than a hundred works by dozens of artists spread over some two kilometres between the church square, the hermitage and the bridge over the river.
Puebla de la Mujer Muerta changes its name
Historical milestone
The village stopped being called Puebla de la Mujer Muerta in 1941 at the wish of the civil governor. The town council proposed Puebla de Madrid, but the Royal Geographical Society recommended the present name, taken from the range that gives it its reclining profile.
