Belmonte de Tajo
Village
Belmonte de Tajo is a town in the Community of Madrid, in the comarca of Las Vegas and the Alcarria de Chinchón, with about 1,950 inhabitants. It was formerly called Pozuelo de Belmonte and Pozuelo de la Soga, until in the early 17th century, after its acquisition by the Duke of Uceda, it came to be called Belmonte, a name simplified to its current form in 1916. Its documented history begins at the end of the 11th century, after the Reconquest; in 1336 Peter I granted it the privilege of villazgo. Disentailed in 1579, it passed to the licentiate Álvaro García de Toledo, founder of the Belmonte entail; in 1691 Charles II raised the lordship to a countship. It preserves the Renaissance church of Nuestra Señora de la Estrella and the hermitage of San Isidro, with cylindrical buttresses, and has performed its Passion play since 1994.
