What to see and do in Valdelaguna

Valdelaguna
Village
Valdelaguna is a town in the Comunidad de Madrid, in the Las Vegas and Alcarria de Chinchón comarcas, 49 km from the capital and at an average altitude of 702 m, with about 1,120 inhabitants. It has been documented since 4 February 1156, when Alfonso VII granted the district of Val de la Laguna to the church of San Ginés in Madrid; in 1480 the Catholic Monarchs included it in the lordship, later county, of Chinchón. The Relaciones Topográficas of Felipe II of 1576 record the lagoon that gives the village its name and its five hermitages, of which only that of Santo Toribio survives. Its church of the Assumption preserves exceptional 15th-century mural paintings, and its district combines olive groves, vineyards with its own winery, and limestone quarries.
Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Valdelaguna
Monument
The church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Valdelaguna is a parish built in several phases, with an origin that may go back to the 13th or 15th centuries, whose apse preserves 15th-century wall paintings: an oil-on-dry-plaster painting depicting a Man of Sorrows Christ surrounded by the Tetramorph, discovered and restored in 2002 and considered an exceptional case of Hispano-Flemish mural painting in the Comunidad de Madrid. The temple was plundered during the Civil War, when the major Baroque altarpiece that the Toledan José Machín had commissioned in 1698 disappeared, along with a canvas of the Assumption attributed to the school of Ribera. In 1462 the nobleman Hernando Díaz de Benavente was buried here, and in 1573 the mystic writer Miguel de la Fuente was baptised here.
