Villar del Olmo
Village
Villar del Olmo is a municipality of about 2,340 inhabitants in the Las Vegas comarca, in the east of the Comunidad de Madrid, resettled by Segovia around 1200, on the border of the Tajuña valley, within the Sexmo de Tajuña of the Comunidad de Ciudad y Tierra de Segovia. In 1214 it came under the archbishopric of Toledo and the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Alcalá de Henares. Its church of Nuestra Señora de la Antigua, dating from the 11th and 12th centuries, is considered one of the finest examples of rural Romanesque architecture in the Madrid region. The patronal festivals are celebrated on 15 May, in honour of St Isidore, and on the third Saturday of September in honour of Our Lady of Solitude.
Church of Nuestra Señora de la Antigua
Monument
One of the finest examples of rural Romanesque architecture in the Comunidad de Madrid, dating from the 11th and 12th centuries, when the Tajuña valley was a frontier land. It is under the invocation of Nuestra Señora de la Antigua; in the second half of the 16th century the transept was added, giving it a Latin-cross plan, and in 1908 the chapel of the Purísima Concepción was built inside. The historian Juan Ortega Rubio described it in his work Historia de Madrid y de los pueblos de su provincia, published in 1921.
