What to see and do in Pozuelo del Rey

Pozuelo del Rey
Village
A municipality of some 1,300 inhabitants at 809 metres, conquered in 1119 by the archbishop of Toledo; its church of Santo Domingo de Silos mixes Gothic and Renaissance elements, and the Forty Days railway, laid during the Civil War, passed through here.
Church of Santo Domingo de Silos de Pozuelo del Rey
Monument
The church of Santo Domingo de Silos, in Pozuelo del Rey, reflects an architecture of the first half of the 16th century and was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 2019. It combines a quadrangular chancel covered with a Gothic ribbed vault of Hontañón influence with a three-nave body separated by Renaissance arcades on slender columns, covered with a wooden roof of Mudéjar tradition. Against the retention of Gothic structures in the main chapel, the nave body was already raised in the new Renaissance style. On the north wall and in the first section of the tower survive remains of an earlier Toledan Mudéjar masonry, showing an early temple built during the resettlement of the district in the 12th and 13th centuries.
Pilgrimage of la Virgen de la Cabeza
Activity
On the fourth Sunday in September the village honours its patron saint at a neoclassical 18th-century hermitage; local tradition puts the devotion down to a soldier who came back from Lepanto in 1571 with the image brought from Andújar.
The station of Pozuelo de la República
Historical milestone
During the Civil War (1936-1939), the Republican government opened a station within the municipal area of Pozuelo del Rey named Pozuelo de la República for the so-called 'forty days railway', the emergency line built to link Madrid with Valencia when the war cut off normal communications.
