Zarza de Tajo
Village
Zarza de Tajo is a municipality in the comarca of La Mancha Conquense, in the province of Cuenca, with 320 inhabitants, documented since the 12th century: in 1108 it already had a small castle belonging to the alfoz of Alharilla, and in 1171 the villa became part of the Order of Santiago through a grant by King Alfonso, who made it the head of a commandery with the commander's residence in the small castle itself. It passed to the Crown around 1562 and later to the lordship of the dukes of Pastrana for about three centuries. It preserves the church of la Visitación, from the late 18th century, the Casa de la Tercia, from the 16th century, and the hermitage of San Isidro Labrador, and celebrates Candlemas in early February.
