What to see and do in Villamanrique de Tajo

Villamanrique de Tajo
Village
Villamanrique de Tajo, one of the smallest municipalities in Las Vegas, with about 860 inhabitants, sits on the banks of the Tagus, on the border with Toledo, and also belongs to the historic comarca of the Alcarria de Chinchón. Its district preserves remains of Palaeolithic hunters, Iberian pottery, Roman villas from the Late Empire, and two small Visigothic necropolises. In Muslim times the hamlet of Albuher arose here, defended by a castle, today in ruins on a hill facing the village, which formed part of the defensive line of the marca media and was destroyed in the Castilian war of succession of 1478. The present-day Villamanrique was born in 1480, when Gabriel Manrique resettled the commons of Albuher for the Order of Santiago, and its main monument is the palace-convent of Buenamesón.
