What to see and do in Paüls

Paüls
Village
Paüls is a mountain municipality in the comarca of Baix Ebre, in the Ports, with 558 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its name comes from the Latin paludes, “marshes.” The castle, documented since 1168, was granted by Alfonso I of Aragon to those responsible for resettling the area; in the 13th century it passed to the Despuig family. During the Carlist Wars it suffered several attacks: in 1834 Carlist troops fortified it until they were expelled, and in 1836 the liberals set fire to the town. In the upper part remains of its walls survive, along with the old Gothic parish church, dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin. It lives from the farming of olives, almonds, carob and cherry trees, whose fair is held in June; the main festival is in August.

Hermitage of la Mare de Déu del Remei
