What to see and do in la Pobla de Montornès

La Pobla de Montornès
Village
La Pobla de Montornès is a municipality of 3,440 inhabitants, at 56 metres of altitude in the Tarragonès. Its castle originated in 1066, when Ramon Berenguer I granted lands to Ramon Trasunyer to build it and resettle the territory; in 1173 the rights passed to Berenguer de Rajadell, whose descendants later sold part of their domains to the abbot of Santes Creus, a monastery that ended up acquiring all the rights over the settlement. The castle was destroyed in the Carlist Wars, but the adjoining hermitage survived, dedicated to the Virgen de Montornès, built in 1783 over the remains of the old chapel; it preserves the Romanesque portal and a polychrome alabaster carving of the Virgen from the 16th century. Since 1976 a Living Nativity has been held there every Christmas.
Castle of Montornès
Monument
The remains, atop a hill one kilometer from the village, correspond to a fortress whose construction was ordered in 1066, when Count Ramon Berenguer I and his wife Almodis ceded the Puigperdiguers to Ramon Transunyer; by 1099 the castle was already built, and from 1173 it passed into the hands of the monastery of Santes Creus. It declined from the 15th century and was abandoned and destroyed during the 19th-century Carlist Wars. An almost square walled precinct survives, about 30 meters per side, along with a solid, consolidated structure in the southwest corner. A Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's top heritage-protection category).
Mas Soler
Monument
A farmhouse documented since 1616, though much altered, the nucleus of the housing development that surrounds it today and also known as Castell de Montornès. Structured around a large central tower -the most striking element of the façade, with a curved, open crowning, two watch turrets and several loopholes, added along with the false battlements in the 19th century- on either side of which the main body of the building develops. The doorway, of ashlar with a voussoired round arch, is slightly shifted to the left relative to the tower; in the inner courtyard the date “1797” of another renovation is preserved. Today it is a municipal facility, the “Mas Solé” Civic Centre for the elderly, in the housing development that bears its name. Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection).
