Castle of Riba-roja Monument · Riba-roja d'Ebre, Ribera d'Ebre, Tarragona A castle that gives its name to Riba-roja d'Ebre, in the Ribera d'Ebre. In 1169 King Alfonso the Chaste pledged it to the Templar master Arnau de Torroja, and in 1181 he granted it in full ownership to the Order of the Temple, which made it the head of its domain in the area during the struggle against the Saracens. The town grew up around this Templar stronghold, which acted as a defensive outpost. Today only remains of the castle survive, incorporated into the medieval complex that crowns the town.
