White goat of Rasquera Food and drink · Rasquera, Ribera d'Ebre, Tarragona Image of Rasquera, not of the place itself. A native white-coated breed, found in several comarcas of southern Catalonia -the Baix Camp, the Baix Ebre, the Ribera d'Ebre and the Terra Alta, in addition to the now-extinct flock of the Montsià-, which takes its name from the municipality of Rasquera. Little is known of its origin, though oral tradition confirms it already existed in the early 20th century; by around the middle of that century it numbered some 30,000 head, now reduced to barely 5,000, concentrated in the most mountainous areas. It is in serious danger of extinction due to the lack of generational succession on farms. It is used mainly for the production of milk-fed kid, with an intense flavour, and its milk is used to make fresh and cured cheeses from the area.
