It occupied a small hill with a flat summit about 15 metres in diameter, of which no visible remains survive today at surface level. Documented since 1153 as Carçeia in a deed of donation, in 1174 Alfonso the Chaste granted it to Guillem de Castellvell, thereby establishing the barony of Entença; in 1324 Garcia joined the county of Prades.
