What to see and do in Poboleda

Poboleda
Village
Poboleda is a wine-growing town in the comarca of the Priorat, with 345 inhabitants, which preserves remains of its medieval wall. In 1270 Abbot Bernat de Déu granted a charter of settlement to its inhabitants, although jurisdiction and taxes continued to belong to the charterhouse of Escaladei, whose first community had settled precisely in Poboleda before moving to its definitive site in 1203. It lives off agriculture, above all the vine, as well as olives and hazelnuts. Its parish church of Sant Pere, built between 1750 and 1753, is a large three-nave neoclassical building known as the cathedral of the Priorat. The main festival begins on 3 August and lasts the whole month; in September the grape harvest festival is celebrated.
Wall of Poboleda
Monument
The wall of Poboleda, declared an asset of national cultural interest, formerly surrounded this town in the comarca of Priorat (Tarragona), which today has 345 inhabitants. No visible remains of the walled enclosure survive; its memory endures only in the name of the plaza del Portalet, which marks the site of one of its old gates. Poboleda was the birthplace of the first community of the Charterhouse of Escaladei, established at the site around 1167 before moving, in 1203, to the site where the present charterhouse stands.
