Castle of Cabacés / Monestir de Santa Maria de Vallclara Monument · Cabacés, Priorat, Tarragona Despite its popular name, the complex known until the 20th century as the castell de Cabacés was originally a monastery: in 1149 the count-king Ramon Berenguer IV granted the place to Abbot Esteve, of the Premonstratensian order, to build a monastery and oratory there. The attempt failed, and in 1158 the priory passed to the cathedral of Tortosa and to Bishop Gaufred; in 1266 an agreement between the bishop and the chapter granted the castle to the prior and the chapter, although the bishops retained the lordship of the barony until the 19th century. The old chapel, which had served as the parish church, was torn down in 1870, and in 1933 public schools were built on the site; in Romanesque style, only the west wall survives, with two rows of arrow slits.
