What to see and do in Mas de Barberans

Mas de Barberans
Village
Mas de Barberans is a rural municipality in the Montsià county, in the province of Tarragona, situated on the border with the Baix Ebre and at the southern entrance to the Ports natural park, home to protected species such as the wild goat and the otter; within its territory lies the prehistoric shelter of Cocó de la Gralla. It is first mentioned in 1155, when Ramón Berenguer IV granted these lands to the bishop of Tortosa, and received a charter of settlement in 1235. During the First Carlist War the liberals fortified themselves in the village church and withstood an attack by Ramón Cabrera's troops before surrendering. Its 535 inhabitants live from agriculture, particularly the olive, with a cooperative devoted to oil; the main festival is held in April.
Cocó de la Gralla
Curiosity
The Cocó de la Gralla cave paintings are found in the Montpou ravine, within the els Ports natural park, in the municipality of Mas de Barberans. They were discovered by a resident of Santa Bàrbara, and in 2014 the Generalitat's Archaeology and Palaeontology Service confirmed their authenticity and launched a plan to recover the site. They include 69 figures in the Levantine style, among them 27 archers, four human figures and three goats, some with ornaments such as feathers, with two rows of running archers and animals and tracks forming a possible hunting scene. The group, with figures not documented in Catalonia until 2018, is dated chronologically to the Epipalaeolithic-Mesolithic, between 10,000 and 7,000 years ago.

Museum of la Pauma
Monument
The work of the pauma, the weaving of dried dwarf-palm leaves to make baskets and utensils, sustained the local economy until the 1970s. The museum, opened in 2010 at the rural development centre, preserves the trade, its tools and its vocabulary, and is also home to the information point of the Ports Natural Park. The building, four storeys adapted to the terrain's topography, devotes one room to the process of working the pauma, from the dwarf-palm plant to the finished piece, and another to the trade's social impact on the area; it also offers workshops in basketry and other plant fibres.
