Church of Santa Bàrbara Monument · Santa Bàrbara, Montsià, Tarragona Image of Santa Bàrbara, not of the place itself. The church of Santa Bàrbara stands in a municipality settled after the War of the Spanish Succession of 1714, whose municipal independence was sanctioned by Ferdinand VII on 9 May 1828. The first settlement of the plains, around 1745, was made up of people from Tortosa, who in 1758 built a chapel dedicated to the saint, the seed of today's town centre; the first parish church was built in 1808, and the current one, built with the help of the whole town from 1894, suffered a partial collapse that delayed the work until its inauguration in 1903; the bell tower and rose window were finished in 1911, and the vault in 1912. Rectangular in plan with a 35-metre tower, it shows neo-Gothic elements of eclecticism and was extended to occupy the whole block between 1949 and 1953.
