Settlement charters of the Order of Sant Joan

The Order of Sant Joan de Jerusalem recognised the place as a villa in 1232 and granted charters of settlement in 1232 and 1235. The place name comes from the Arabic saniya, the device for drawing water from wells, and it also gives its name to the river that crosses the district.
