What to see and do in Llorenç del Penedès

Llorenç del Penedès
Village
Llorenç del Penedès is a municipality in the Baix Penedès comarca, in the province of Tarragona, almost at its geographic centre, at 162 metres above sea level, with the smallest municipal area in the comarca. It has about 2,425 inhabitants and lives on dry farming, with vines, cereals, almond trees and olive trees. The village grew up beside its old castle, whose lordship belonged to the Tous, Desbosc and Maldà families; during the Guerra dels Segadors it remained loyal to Philip IV, unlike other castles in the area. The present building, from the 19th century, retains a medieval air and the façades of the castell termenat. The parish church of San Lorenzo, from the 14th century, holds a pre-Romanesque baptismal font. Its main festival is celebrated in August, for San Lorenzo.
Castle of Llorenç
Monument
Castle of Llorenç del Penedès (Baix Penedès, Tarragona), documented since 1352 and declared a bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). In 1371 King Peter the Ceremonious sold its jurisdiction to Bernat Tous, whose family kept it until Beatriu de Tous; it later passed to the Desbosc i Vilagaià family, until 1671, and in the 18th century to the barons of Maldà. It combines Gothic architecture with historicist alterations of 1792 and 1848, and preserves an attached cylindrical tower, a bastion with a voussoired arched gateway, towers on both sides and a quadrangular interior courtyard.
Llorenç del Penedès Main Festival
Activity
Main festival of Llorenç del Penedès, in the Baix Penedès, celebrated on the eve of Sant Llorenç, 9 August. Since at least 16 August 1890, the date of the first documented reference, the Aficionats Castellers de Llorenç del Penedès have raised castells in the village on this single day of the year, a tradition that has been kept up almost without interruption ever since. The castellers wear no distinctive shirt and are identified by a distinctive scarf that they renew each season; in 2014 they received the social initiative award of the Nit de Castells. Lloréns, the Spanish name of the town, grew up around its old castle, documented since the 14th century.
Phylloxera and the vine crisis in the Penedès
Historical milestone
The plague reached the vineyards of the comarca around 1890 and ruined the main source of income of the inland villages. The fall in population and the emigration continued until the nineteen forties, despite the replanting with American rootstock.
