What to see and do in Albinyana

Albinyana
Village
Albinyana is a municipality in the Baix Penedès, in the province of Tarragona, with 2718 inhabitants, which preserves the castle of l'Esquernosa and the Cova de Vallmajor. In the 11th century Viscount Guitard built a castle on the site, which passed by will to the monastery of Sant Cugat and was left uninhabited for fear of Saracen attacks; no remains of it survive, although it is believed to have occupied the site of the present-day village centre. The economy has been based on dry farming, with vines, cereals and hazelnut trees, and until the mid-20th century on the manufacture of dwarf-palm baskets. Walking through Albinyana one sees the parish church of San Bartolomé, documented since 1120, and Cal Pau Magí, a 17th-century mansion on the plaza Major with the date 1637 inscribed on its staircase.
Castle of Albinyana
Monument
The Castell d'Albinyana is a castell termenat, a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), whose ruins stand on a hill near the hermitage of Sant Antoni, in Albinyana (Baix Penedès); it preserves remains of a wall and the base of a watchtower. The site was reconquered in 986 by Adalbert, son of Viscount Guitard, who on his death in 1010 bequeathed it to the monastery of Sant Cugat. In 1040 the abbot of the monastery ceded it to Bernat Odger de Castellet, on condition that he rebuild it and raise a stone-and-lime tower within seven years, since the first castle had fallen into ruin. A document from 1088 describes it as destroyed and depopulated for fear of the Saracens, and a bull of Pope Urban II confirmed in 1098 the castle and its church as possessions of Sant Cugat.
Cave of Vallmajor
Nature
Cave with cave art representations located in the municipality of Albinyana, in the Baix Penedès, 150 m above the torrent de Vallmajor, next to the spring of the same name, protected as a World Heritage Site as part of the rock art of the Mediterranean Basin of the Iberian Peninsula. Beyond an entrance portico about 3 m high, galleries develop that descend to a chamber measuring 9 by 2.5 m, where a set of 17 schematic figures of quadrupeds, arches, a cross inscribed in a circle and strokes is preserved, partly covered by Bronze Age deposits. The paintings were discovered in 1961 and the cave is currently kept closed for its protection, although it has suffered graffiti.
