What to see and do in Bellvei

Bellvei
Village
Bellvei is a municipality in the Baix Penedès, in Tarragona, at 108 metres above sea level, with a northern part in the Penedès depression and a southern part made rugged by a pre-coastal range whose highest peak is la Muga, at 162 m. The tower of Bellvei, then the tower of Tedbert, is already mentioned in 1037 as a fortress dependent on the castle of Castellet, on which it depended until the 18th century; completely rebuilt in 1932, it was incorporated into the Cal Roig building, circular in plan. The nearby Mas de la Muga, belonging to the Parellada-Vilella family and documented since the 11th century, gives its name to the settlement of Baronía del Mar, 3 km away, where the castle of la Muga stands. The municipality was formed after the end of the seigneuries in 1835 and lives partly on vines, carob trees and cereals. It has 2,460 inhabitants.
Mas de la Muga
Monument
The Mas de la Muga is an old farmhouse converted into a historicist-style castle, in the district of Bellvei, in the Baix Penedès. It stands on a hill 154 metres high and is documented as a fortified manor since the 11th century, although its present appearance comes from a renovation that rebuilt the complex using the medieval materials of the old manor; according to tradition, it was commissioned by a wealthy woman from Bellvei who wanted to live comfortably outside the village without giving up seeing it every morning. Declared a bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), it still preserves three towers, two cylindrical and crenellated with machicolations on one side and a square crenellated one on the other, along with rectangular windows visible despite the poor condition of the building, built of brick and iron and now abandoned.
Tower of Bellvei
Monument
A medieval tower on the plaza Nova of Bellvei (Baix Penedès, Tarragona), at 102 metres above sea level, today incorporated into the Gothic building known as Can Roig. Cylindrical in plan and of popular defensive construction, it preserves two narrow semicircular-arched openings and another square one, arranged irregularly, as well as a quadrangular structure supported by two corbels. Documented since 1037, in the 14th century it belonged to the Bellvei family: Arnau de Bellvei was a member of the Order of the Hospital, and in 1326 Guillem de Bellvei bought the castle of Lavit, which forced the royal intervention of Peter III for its restitution. In 1370 it had 32 hearths under Eimeric de Bellvei, a figure that the plague reduced to 17 in 1553. Restored in 1932, it is declared a bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection).
