What to see and do in Santa Oliva

Santa Oliva
Village
Santa Oliva is a municipality in the Baix Penedès comarca, in the province of Tarragona, situated at 101 metres above sea level, with 3,711 inhabitants. Already mentioned in 938 as a possession of the monastery of Sant Cugat, it was ceded in 1012 to Isnabert for its resettlement, protected first by a tower and later by a castle whose remains, with a semicircular vault, are still preserved in the upper part of the village. The old hall of the castle became, in the 18th century, the sanctuary of the Virgin of the Remedy, annexing the Romanesque chapel of San Julián. Every last Thursday of August the village celebrates the Vot del Poble, a procession renewing a promise made in 1854 after being freed from a cholera epidemic.
Castle of Santa Oliva
Monument
Castle of Santa Oliva (Baix Penedès, Tarragona), around which the historic centre of the town developed, between the municipalities of Albinyana, el Vendrell, Bellvei, Banyeres del Penedès and la Bisbal del Penedès. It originated in a tower that Isnabert built in 1012, which later became the castle. The origins of the place go back to 986, when the Frankish king Lothair confirmed to an abbot of Sant Cugat the possession of the church of Santa Maria.
Santa Oliva Main Festival
Activity
The Festa Major de Santa Oliva (Baix Penedès, Tarragona) has its origin in the Vot del Poble: the town made this vow to the Mare de Déu del Remei after being spared from the cholera epidemic that severely struck Vilanova i la Geltrú in 1854. Since then, this vow has been observed on the last Thursday of August, giving rise to the town's main festival.
Calçots of the Baix Penedès
Food and drink
The comarca is one of the four large producers of calçots in Catalonia. The shoots are planted in summer, earthed up during the autumn and gathered from January to March to be roasted over vine shoots at the calçotades.
