What to see and do in Castellet i la Gornal

Castellet i la Gornal
Village
Castellet i la Gornal is a municipality in the comarca of Alt Penedès, in the province of Barcelona (Catalonia), located at the point of contact between the Garraf and the two Penedès comarcas. It has 2,776 inhabitants (INE 2025) and is made up of the old settlements of Castellet and la Gornal, next to the reservoir formed by the Foix river within its territory. The relief is more mountainous towards the north, with heights such as the Turó de les Tres Partions (431 m). Documentary records of the castle of Castellet, which gives the municipality its name, exist since the year 977. In the settlement of Clariana stands the sanctuary of Montserrat de Clariana, consecrated in 1973.
Castle of Castellet
Monument
The castle of Castellet stands in the Foix natural park, halfway between Barcelona and Tarragona, in the Alt Penedès comarca, and is today the seat of the Fundació Abertis. It was built in the year 977 to defend the Marca Hispanica, first as a simple domicilium with a watchtower and a small wall, extended between the 11th and 12th centuries -the 12th-century keep, about 15 metres high, is the oldest surviving element-; its strategic position made it grow in power, passing through the hands of 44 owners, among them the Santmartí, the Castellet, the Requesens and finally the counts of Queralt, until the abolition of feudal lordships in 1837. It was rebuilt in 1928-1929 by the architect Josep de Peray i March, and today houses rooms that the foundation makes available for presentations, seminars and conventions.
New Castle of la Gornal
Monument
A fortification documented in the 14th century, declared an Asset of National Cultural Interest in 1988, of which only a few worked ashlars survive next to the camí de Clariana; after its decline a farmhouse, the Mas Castellnou, was built with its remains, itself now also in ruins.
Park of el Foix
Nature
The Parc del Foix covers some 3,157 hectares in the foothills of the Massís del Garraf, between the comarques of Alt Penedès, Baix Penedès and Garraf, equidistant from Vilanova i la Geltrú, El Vendrell and Vilafranca del Penedès. Managed by the Consorci del Parc del Foix, its central feature is the Foix reservoir, built on the river of the same name and in service since 1928, one of the few wetlands in the Penedès; its waters are not fit for human consumption owing to discharges from Vilafranca's wastewater treatment plant. The landscape combines holm-oak woods and Aleppo pine forests with riverside vegetation of ash and poplar trees, and it is a refuge for wildlife such as the Bonelli's eagle, alongside historic castles such as that of Castellet, documented since the year 977.
