What to see and do in Banyeres del Penedès

Banyeres del Penedès
Village
Banyeres del Penedès is a municipality in the Penedès depression, in the centre of the Baix Penedès, with the castle of la Guàrdia and the Casa Murada. The tower of la Guàrdia de Banyeres, today in ruins, is already mentioned in a document from 938 concerning the possessions of the monastery of Sant Cugat; circular in plan and about twelve metres high, it is the only part of the old castle still standing. In 1172 Santa Maria de Banyeres was a priory of Ripoll, of which only the hermitage, of Romanesque architecture, remains today. In 1998, next to the Masies de Sant Miquel, an Iberian site from the 3rd century BC was discovered, declared a bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection) for being considered the nerve centre of the Cossetania Oriental.
Castle of Banyeres
Monument
The castle of Banyeres del Penedès (Baix Penedès, Tarragona), known as la Guàrdia de Banyeres, is a Romanesque tower atop a hill, today partly in ruins: cylindrical in plan and built of masonry of irregular stones, it retains less than half of its original twelve metres in height. It is documented since the year 938 among the possessions of Louis d'Outremer, and in 988 King Lothair assigned it to the monastery of Sant Cugat; in 1032 Bishop Guadall granted it in fief to Mir Llop Sanç, whose family extended its domains across the comarca. In 1371 it passed into royal ownership. Remains of Muslim pottery have been found at the site, and the complex is a bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection).
The Walled House
Monument
La Casa Murada is a 13th-century manor house with Gothic and Renaissance elements located in Banyeres del Penedès, beside the Papiolet stream, declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). It covers about 600 m² and features a square defensive tower, wider at the base, with two pointed-arch windows arranged irregularly; to its left stands a small crenellated tower. It is built of rammed earth, with a voussoired semicircular gateway and openings in the Gothic-Renaissance tradition, and also has a cellar and an 18th-century chapel. In 2007 the musician Jesús Rovira, of Lax'n'Busto, converted the farmhouse into a recording studio, and since 2011 it has housed the Tots Sants audiovisual project.
