What to see and do in Pratdip

Pratdip
Village
Pratdip is a municipality in the province of Tarragona, with 781 inhabitants, which preserves the castle of Pratdip and defence towers from its old wall, among them the Capet tower, with an arch that served as a prison. It belonged to the barony of Entença and later to the county of Prades, and is already recorded in 1154; during the Carlist Wars it kept a permanent garrison in the castle. The parish church of Santa María combines a Romanesque apse and portal with a Gothic vault, and holds a sepulchral slab from 1328. A few kilometres away stands the hermitage of Santa Marina, a 16th-century sanctuary to which, according to tradition, unmarried young women went on pilgrimage in search of a partner. The village lives from agriculture, mainly hazelnut and olive trees.
Tower of defensa de Pratdip
Monument
Medieval defence tower located in the municipality of Pratdip, in the Baix Camp comarca (Tarragona), declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's designation for cultural heritage of national interest). It is a very well preserved square tower, built of rubble masonry with ashlar at the corners. It retains part of its battlemented parapet and a machicolation, though deteriorated. It formed part of the old walled precinct of Pratdip, a town that belonged to the Barony of Entença: according to the historian Josep Iglésies, the village was once entirely walled, with square towers standing at irregular intervals, encircling the hill up to the heavy obelisk that guards the castle.
Tower of el Capet
Monument
Tower located in the municipality of Pratdip, in the Baix Camp, declared a bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's designation for cultural heritage of national interest). It is a square defence tower, built of rubble masonry with ashlar at the corners, which retains some battlements and a machicolation at the top; below it opens the old semicircular arched gateway that gave access to the village.
Castle of Pratdip
Monument
The castle of Pratdip, in the Baix Camp (Tarragona), is Gothic in style and is documented from the mid-12th century, when its parish church is mentioned in a papal bull of 1154. It belonged to the barony of Entença from 1244, and in 1324 King James II acquired it and joined it to the newly created county of Prades; in the 15th century it passed to the duchy of Cardona, and from 1663 it belonged to the dukes of Medinaceli, the last lords of the castle and the town of Pratdip. Today it is in ruins: only some later walls survive on the hill, without a roof, and it is declared a bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's designation for cultural heritage of national interest).
