What to see and do in Rodonyà

Rodonyà
Village
Rodonyà is a municipality in Alt Camp, on the boundary with Baix Penedès, next to the Montmell and on the left bank of the Riera de Gaià, at an altitude of 312 metres, with 519 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its castle, documented since 1310 when Archbishop Guillem de Rocabertí bought it together with Vilabella, gives the village its name; it passed in 1409 to the lords of Tamarit and, after centuries under various lineages, was sold in 1868 and ended up in the hands of the Town Council. Of it are preserved the four walls crowned with battlements, remains of arches and walls, a stretch of wall and some mines. At the centre stands the neoclassical 18th-century church of Saint John the Baptist. It celebrates its winter festival after 20 January, for Saint Sebastian, and its festa major after 29 August, for Saint John the Baptist, patron of the village.
Castle of Rodonyà
Monument
The castle of Rodonyà, in Alt Camp (Tarragona), was the centre of the barony of the same name; the earliest documentary references to the place date from the second half of the 11th century, linked to the castle of Castellvell de la Marca. The present building, quadrangular in plan with a voussoired semicircular-arch doorway and battlemented crown, is the result of a thorough Renaissance remodelling in the mid-16th century. In 1310 it was bought by the archbishop of Tarragona, and in 1409 Bernat de Tamarit obtained jurisdiction and the title of baron, a title that reached that of count in 1707 with Salvador de Tamarit. The municipality acquired it in 1919 and it even housed a school; since 2008 it has been restored in phases, the last one completed in 2017.
Rodonyà Main Festival
Activity
Rodonyà celebrates its winter festivity on the weekend following 20 January, for San Sebastián, and its summer fiesta mayor on the weekend following 29 August, in honor of San Juan Bautista, patron saint of the town; it includes the traditional spoken dance depicting the saint's beheading, revived in 2013.
