What to see and do in Preixana

Preixana
Village
Preixana is a municipality in the comarca of Urgell, in the province of Lérida, with the parish church of Santa María, in late Gothic style with Renaissance details, which preserves part of a stone altarpiece with a scene from the life of the Virgin; the rest is divided between Solsona and Bellpuig. Its castle, already mentioned in 1080 and sold in 1227 to the monastery of Vallbona de les Monges, survives only as a stretch of wall with a small door and a former prison chamber. In 1970 a funerary stele bearing the figure of a warrior was found in its surroundings, dated between 2000 and 1500 BC. The municipality has 401 inhabitants.
Parish Church of Santa Maria de Preixana
Monument
Parish church of Preixana, with a rectangular plan and a single nave, a straight main altar covered by two bays of ribbed vaulting, and a sacristy behind the altar. The vault keystones preserve the monogram of Christ and the date 1673, the year of the interior and façade reforms; the ribs end in anthropomorphic corbels and the buttresses reinforce the four corners. The portal, classicist within the Baroque style, is an architraved doorway topped with a triangular pediment. It suffered damage from the earthquakes of 1427-1428 and, at the end of the Civil War, from a bomb that affected the chancel; Regiones Devastadas rebuilt it between 1945 and 1948. It was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 2017.
