Anglesola
Village
Anglesola is a municipality of l'Urgell, in the province of Lleida, with 1,389 inhabitants, on flat land crossed by the Urgell canal and its irrigation ditches. Documented since 1079, when Ramon Berenguer II and Berenguer Ramon II granted these lands for resettlement, it was the centre of a barony decisive in the Catalan reconquest, whose lineage died out in 1382. The parish church, dedicated to Sant Pau de Narbona, is in the late Gothic style of the 15th century, with a single nave, side chapels and choir, with a roof combining ribbed, groin and barrel vaults, a mixture characteristic of other Catalan churches of the period. On either side of its entrance door are preserved two Romanesque images of San Pedro and San Pablo, the work of Ramon de Bianya, from the 12th century.
Church of Sant Pau de Narbona
Monument
Parish church of Anglesola (Urgell), documented as a parish since 1160 and belonging to the diocese of Vic until it passed to that of Solsona in the 16th century. The present building, with a single nave and side chapels between buttresses, was built between the 15th and 16th centuries, sources not agreeing on the exact century, combining ribbed and groin vaults with barrel-vaulted sections, a mixture of styles typical of the period; the plain façade has a single round-arched doorway with a drip moulding and an oculus above, and the bell tower is square in plan, topped with a balustrade. On the façade two Romanesque reliefs of Sant Pere and Sant Pau are preserved, from the previous 12th-century temple, the only pieces saved from that church; the main altar is presided over by a stone image of Sant Pau from the 14th century.
Anglesola Main Festival
Activity
The fiesta mayor of Anglesola is celebrated in the month of May; the town's parish church is dedicated to San Pablo de Narbona. In March the festivity of San Antonio Abad is also celebrated, with the traditional Tres Tombs (Three Rounds).
Mixed stew of the Urgell
Food and drink
Stew of pulses, vegetables and various pork and poultry meats, typical of the peasant cooking of the Plana. It is served in two courses, first the broth with pasta or rice and afterwards the meats, and it appears at festa major meals.
