What to see and do in Vilanova de Bellpuig

Vilanova de Bellpuig
Village
Vilanova de Bellpuig is a municipality in the Pla d'Urgell, in the southeast of the comarca, with 1,150 inhabitants (2025). Settlement of this area, the Mascançà, began around 1079, and after the conquest of Lleida in 1149 the lords of Anglesola promoted a 'new town' by granting advantages to settlers who came mainly from Bellpuig, from which it took its name. The first document dates from 1181, when Guillem d'Anglesola and his wife Arsendis granted the Templars the pasture and firewood rights of several villages, among them Vilanova. In the 1359 hearth-tax count it had 35 houses, and in the mid-14th century the Gothic parish church was built. After the War of the Spanish Succession and the famine of 1747-1754 the population recovered, reaching 839 inhabitants in 1860.

Vilanova de Bellpuig Main Festival
Activity
The Festa Major of Vilanova de Bellpuig, in the Pla d'Urgell, is celebrated from 3 to 7 September to bid farewell to summer; the municipality also holds a Festa Major Petita of Sant Pere in June. One of its symbols are the giants Mercè and Paco, carved by the vilanovenc sculptor Josep Maria Florensa i Piró and unveiled on 4 September 2003 during the Festa Major, sponsored by the giants of Juneda. They stand 3.75 metres tall and represent two real residents of the village: Paco, an employee of a grain company and later a referee at the bitlles (skittles) club, and Mercè, who delivered milk door to door. They are carried by the Colla de Geganters i Grallers de Vilanova de Bellpuig, which also has capgrossos (big-heads).
