Maldà
Village
Maldà is a municipality in the comarca of l'Urgell, in the province of Lleida, with 239 inhabitants, situated in the Vall del Corb, in whose territory also lies the depopulated settlement of the Maldanell. There the oldest remains are preserved, from Iberian times: a dolmen, tombs cut into the rock and Roman remains from the 2nd century, as well as an old watchtower, on whose hill now stands the hermitage of Sant Joan del Maldanell. The Cardona family, viscounts of Osona, were the first lords of the territory and resettled the place around 1040, granted in 1082 to the counts of Barcelona. The castle of Maldà, declared a Site of Cultural Interest, was damaged in the First Carlist War of 1833 and has been restored; also preserved is the Romanesque church of San Pedro, from the 12th century.
Castle of Maldà
Monument
Castle declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's top heritage-protection category) and symbol of the municipality; resettled around 1040 by the Cardona family, it was damaged during the First Carlist War in 1833 and has been restored, preserving a hall with arcades.
