Vilagrassa
Village
Vilagrassa is a municipality in the comarca of Urgell, in the province of Lleida, situated 43 kilometres from the provincial capital and watered by the River Ondara -which arrives from Tàrrega on its way to Anglesola- and by the canal d'Urgell. Its territory, mostly flat except for some moorland to the south, rises to 355 metres and is crossed by the A-2 motorway and the C-53 road towards Balaguer. The town received a municipal charter from Alfonso I of Provence in 1185, and in 1301 King Peter III of Aragon granted it the privileges of an annual fair and weekly market. In the village the church of Santa Maria stands out, built between the 13th and 14th centuries, with a main altar and seven side altars. It now has 627 inhabitants and the third weekend of September hosts the Fira de l'Ametlla.
